On May 29, the China’s 1st International Symposium on Coiled Tubing Technology opened in Wuhan. The conference, themed “Innovative Application Scenarios, Unleashing Infinite Potential, and Sharing the Development in the Coiled Tubing Industry,” promoted the development concept of “technology-driven innovation and win-win cooperation” to share achievements and discuss the industry's future. The event was co-hosted by the China Petroleum Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd CPET), National Engineering Research Center for Oil & Gas Drilling and Completion Technologies, National R&D Center for Intelligent Oil & Gas Well Engineering, the Coiled Tubing Engineering Committee of the Chinese Petroleum Society, and the CNPC Coiled Tubing Operations Technology R&D Center. Co-organizers included CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, and renowned universities.
Top experts from the industry, including Academicians Su Yinao, Li Gensheng, Sun Jinsheng, and Xie Yuhong, attended the event by invitation. Also present were Steve Moir (Chair of ICoTA), Chris Schneider (Former Chair), Pierre Ramondenc (Board Member), Mohammad Ahsan (Business Manager at NOV Downhole Tools and Services), Stephen Burger (Southeast Asia Manager at EV Offshore Ltd), along with over 400 representatives from more than 60 companies and institutions, both domestic and international.
A total of 28 high-quality technical presentations were delivered during the forum, covering cutting-edge topics such as ultra-deep and long horizontal well coiled tubing operations, coiled tubing digitalization, coiled tubing drilling, coiled tubing logging, and offshore applications. Among these, the special session on coiled tubing digitalization drew widespread attention, reflecting the industry’s strong momentum toward intelligent intervention technologies.
During the conference, Steve Moir delivered a keynote presentation and officially announced the authorization for the establishment of ICoTA China, which will be led by CPET. And pointed out that the future development of coiled tubing technology will primarily focus on intelligent operations, enhanced adaptability to extreme conditions, and deep integration with the energy transition.
The event took place amid the rapid expansion of China’s coiled tubing market. In 2024 alone, over 15,000 coiled tubing interventions were performed across the country, placing China at the forefront globally and highlighting the enormous potential of this dynamic market.
On May 30, Steve Moir, Chris Schneider, Pierre Ramondenc, and Stephen Burger visited Yangtze University for discussions and exchanges.
Following this, the delegation visited Jianghan Machinery Research Institute Limited Company of CNPC(JMRI, under CPET). The visit and the following meeting were hosted by Liu Guanghua, Deputy General Manager of CPET with attendance from JMRI and related technical teams.
Steve Moir expressed high appreciation for the successful symposium and JMRI’s innovative achievements in coiled tubing technology.
To build a long-term cooperative mechanism, both parties proposed advancing collaboration in areas such as website construction, conference alignment, technical matchmaking, and capacity building. This includes organizing Chinese representatives to participate in ICoTA global conferences, regularly publishing lists of industry needs, and launching standardized training programs—thereby promoting cross-regional academic-industry cooperation and enhancing the global competitiveness of Chinese service companies.
This visit marks an important step toward international collaboration and technology sharing between CPET+JMRI and ICoTA. Both sides will jointly explore innovative pathways in energy technology to contribute new momentum to the sustainable development of industry.
